In September 2022 St. Joseph’s Rochfortbridge was selected to participate in a JCT project entitled STE(A)M in Action in Schools. 37 schools from across the country were selected to participate in this project.
What is the project about?
1. The STE(A)M in Action schools project provides time and opportunity for collaboration between teachers in school from different subject areas.
2. Teachers are supported to help students make meaningful and authentic connections between learning in different subjects.
3. Teachers engage with students implementing a small STE(A)M in Action Project in their school. Participating in this project supports students in connecting school subject learning that takes place in other life contexts and in connecting classroom learning with real world societal issues and problems.
We created a teachers focus group. The group was made up of 7 teachers from a range of subject areas. We attended 4 online workshops up until January 2023. We decided on a project to work on, which was titled ‘The gender balance in STEM subjects in St. Josephs’.
We created a student focus group, made up of 14 second years. The group worked on creating interview questions, interviewing TY students, researching information on gender balance, collating data on the numbers of each gender in the practical subjects. Developing a series of powerpoint slides to promote and highlight the gender balance.
We attended the ‘ Celebration of Learning’ event in the Court Hotel in Tullamore on April 20th. Here the students could display their work and visit other stands from different schools, chat and discuss their work.
At the event, teachers got to share their insights into how they developed their understanding of STE(A)M, integrated STE(A)M learning in and across their subject areas and initiated student voice and choice in the classroom.
Students also sharred their experience of this interdisciplinary initiative and how they have connected school learning to societal and real-world issues in a wonderful display of student voice.
The event was attended by members of the inspectorate, industry and 3rd level institutions.
Going forward we plan to introduce another student group to STEAM and develop a new action project.
